You already know you need a car seat, a crib, and a mountain of diapers. This list goes past those basics to the things that made the newborn weeks so much easier for us, the ones you’ll be glad you added to your registry.
Here are my six favorites, plus a few safety notes worth knowing before you use them.

The Baby Basics (You Already Know These)
- Infant car seat
- A safe place for baby to sleep (crib or bassinet)
- Stroller
- Diapers and wipes
- Clothes (more onesies than you think)
6 Baby Must-Haves That Aren’t As Obvious
- Baby carrier
- Baby bouncer
- Muslin swaddle blankets
- Activity mat
- Portable changing pad
- Hands-free pumping bra
1. Baby Carrier (infant or structured)
Babywearing lets you feel like a normal human again. You can hold your baby and still have both hands free for coffee, laundry, or chasing an older sibling. Bonus: most babies fall asleep fast in a carrier.
This soft-structured carrier is my favorite by far. You can read more about why in my full carrier review.
2. BabyBjörn Bouncer Balance
Trust me on this one. You need this bouncer. Here’s why:
- Lightweight, so it moves from room to room with you
- Folds flat for storage and travel
- Adjustable recline, which helps babies with reflux
- Rocks naturally with a gentle push or baby’s own movements
- Optional toy bar for a little extra entertainment

3. Muslin Swaddle Blankets
They’re breathable, come in the cutest prints, and you’ll use them for everything: swaddling, burp cloths, a clean spot for tummy time, or a light layer on a cool day.
4. Activity Mat
An activity mat keeps your baby entertained and has real developmental perks. It’s also portable, easy to clean, great for tummy time, and you can swap the toys as baby grows.
Newborns see high-contrast colors best (think black and white), so look for a mat with bold, contrasting patterns. If you fall for a cute one that’s more muted, that’s okay. Just clip on a few high-contrast toys.
A newer mat I’ve fallen in love with is this one.

5. Portable Changing Pad (for the diaper bag)
No changing table in sight? A portable changing pad turns any surface into one. And let’s be honest, public restrooms are gross, so you’ll want this with you.
Keep one in your diaper bag at all times. If your bag already comes with one, grab a second for the car. It’s a lifesaver for back-seat diaper changes.
6. Hands-Free Pumping Bra (if you’re pumping)
If you plan to pump, this lets you pump both sides at once while you answer an email, eat a snack, or scroll Instagram. Small purchase, big quality-of-life upgrade.
Baby Must-Haves FAQ
What do you really need for a newborn?
The true essentials are a car seat, a safe sleep space, diapers and wipes, clothes, and a way to feed baby. Everything on this list makes those early months easier, but none of it replaces the basics.
Is it safe for a baby to sleep in a bouncer?
No. Bouncers, swings, and carriers aren’t safe for sleep. If baby falls asleep in one, move them to a flat, firm crib or bassinet on their back.
When should I stop swaddling?
As soon as your baby starts showing signs of rolling. At that point, switch to a wearable blanket or sleep sack with arms free.
