Play Kitchen Renovation

I found this corner play kitchen in a local swap and sell group for $15. It wasn’t in the best shape, but that is the whole point of a makeover. Here is everything I used and how it came together.

What I Used

  • A corner play kitchen like this one (mine was secondhand)
  • Krylon Metallic Gold spray paint for all of the hardware
  • Navy blue paint for the wood backboards (I used Van Deusen Blue)
  • White paint for the appliances
  • Peel and stick subway tile for the backsplash

Step 1: Clean It Up

It wasn’t in the best shape, so before any paint went near it I gave the whole thing a good cleaning.

Step 2: Spray the Hardware Gold

I spray painted all of the hardware gold, using Krylon Metallic Gold Spray Paint. It is a small change that does a lot of the work.

Step 3: Paint the Backboards Navy

Then I painted the upper wood backboards navy blue (Van Deusen Blue), as well as the chalkboard on the fridge.

Step 4: Paint the Appliances

The washing machine was pink and I painted that white. I wasn’t sure what to paint the microwave, so I went with dark gray.

Step 5: Add the Subway Tile Backsplash

For the subway tile backsplash, I bought peel and stick subway tiles on Amazon. At first, I thought I was finished when it looked like this:

Step 6: Go Back for More Navy

But, after a while, I decided I needed some more navy blue.

Step 7: Repaint the Microwave White

After I did that, I thought I should paint the microwave white to match the washing machine.

The One Thing I Would Still Change

I need to figure out what to put over the microwave “buttons”. I had to paint over them with one coat because it was too difficult to paint around them. Maybe I’ll buy some stickers to serve that purpose. It isn’t perfect, but overall, I am happy with how this play kitchen turned out.

Play Kitchen Makeover Questions

Where do you find a play kitchen worth making over?

Local swap and sell groups, Facebook Marketplace and kids’ consignment sales. Mine was $15. Scratches and faded plastic do not matter at all since it is all getting painted, so look for one that is solid and still has all of its pieces.

What kind of paint did you use?

Spray paint for the hardware, since it is faster and does not leave brush marks on small curved pieces, and regular paint for the flat wood panels. The gold was Krylon Metallic Gold and the navy was Van Deusen Blue.

How do you do the backsplash?

Peel and stick subway tile, cut to fit the back panel. No grout and no mess.

Can you do this in different colors?

Yes. Navy, white and gold is what I went with, but the same steps work with any two colors plus a metallic for the hardware.
