Sample Amazon Baby Registry: A Practical Checklist of What You Actually Need

This post contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.

As a mom of three, I’ve tested a lot of baby products. This sample Amazon baby registry is my list of favorites, the things I’d buy again, as well as some new things I would get if I had a baby now. I registered at Amazon so almost everything was in one place. No registry fits every family and you don’t need every item here, so treat it as a starting point.

On the Go: Car Seats, Strollers & Carriers

Before choosing a stroller, work through my stroller buying guide to narrow down what fits your everyday routine.

Soft-structured carrier
Why I like it: This carrier offers excellent support and adjusts as your baby grows.
Best for: Longer outings when I want more support than a wrap. It is bulkier to pack.

For more picks and reviews, read my guides to Car Seats, Strollers, and Carriers.

This works as a nursing cover, too. It’s a cover that does more than one job.

Car Seat Travel Bag

Car Seat Travel Bag

This leaves my hands free in the airport. Great for carrying a car seat through the terminal. Check your airline’s car-seat baggage rules before packing.
There are many options for this. I’ve only tried one travel bag, so I won’t pick a winner.

Side note: I always want parents to make informed choices, so read this article on the safety risks.

Contain & Entertain: Bouncers, Swings, & Play Mats

You’ll love having safe places to put your baby down during the day. For more bouncers, swings, and play mats, plus when to use each one, read Contain & Entertain.

BabyBjörn bouncer + toy bar
Why I like it: The Bouncer and Toy Bar are among my favorite baby items.
Best for: A spot for baby during supervised awake time. Read my full bouncer review.

Activity center
Best for: A later-stage registry pick for playtime, once your baby meets the product’s developmental requirements. Activity Center

Lovevery play mat
Why I like it: This play mat was my favorite new find with baby #3.
Best for: A dedicated spot for floor play.

More playtime picks: Wooden Sensory Balls for exploring and grasping; a playard with its included changing attachment for a second changing station on another floor.

Favorite Baby Toys

There are so many great toys and books out there. These are a few of my very favorites.

Sleep: Accessories, Swaddles, & Sleep Sacks

You won’t find a crib here because that’s a personal pick. For cribs, crib mattresses, and other places for baby to sleep, read Baby Sleep Spots. For more sleep gear, see Baby Sleep Stuff.

Bassinet

Bassinet

My babies slept in a bassinet next to me for the first few months. If you do the same, look for mesh sides you can see through and push down. Reaching in at 3am is a lot easier that way.

Smart Monitor

I loved having this. But it is a personal choice. For some people, it causes more anxiety. But for some, it helps calm anxiety.

Lightweight, breathable, and useful for everything from swaddling to stroller shade (without covering the stroller or restricting airflow). One of those things you’ll reach for constantly.

Newborn Lounger

Newborn Lounger

Nice to have for setting the baby down for a few minutes. Supervised time only, though. It is not for unsupervised sleep.

Plan on a few swaddles and sleep sacks. Your baby’s needs change fast, and they may end up with a favorite. These are my all-time favorites, and they’re popular with other moms too.

Diapering & Diaper Bags

For everything else diaper-related, read Diapering Essentials. And diaper bags don’t have to look like diaper bags. Check out these stylish diaper bags.

Once you have a bag, my diaper bag essentials checklist will help you plan what to pack for those first outings.

Diapers and Wipes

Diapers and Wipes

Fit varies by brand and by baby, so try not to stock up before they arrive. Start with one pack of a couple of brands, and keep in mind that newborn size does not last long.

If you choose a wipeable changing pad, you won’t need these liners. Otherwise, they are a must-have!

Bath Time

For more tub options and bath accessories, read Baby Bath Stuff. Click any image below to see the item.

Infant tub — Helps make newborn baths easier. A Spout Cover is a later addition when you move to the big tub.

Bath toys + storage
Why I like them: Foam Alphabet and Stacking Cups were favorites for all three of my kids.
Best for: Playtime in the big tub. A Bath Toy Storage bin keeps toys together between baths.

Infant Tub & Towels

Infant Tub & Towels

There are a lot of options here and most of them work fine. What matters is that it holds a slippery newborn at an angle so you still have a hand free. You will only need it for a few months.

Feeding: Bottles & Bibs

I prefer silicone and glass bottles, but that might not be you. Also, not every baby takes every bottle. My Baby Bottle Buying Guide walks through the options so you can decide where to start.

Pocket bibs
Why I like them: These pocket bibs wipe clean, roll up for storage, and catch dropped food.
Best for: Meals at home and a spare in the diaper bag.

How the Amazon Baby Registry Discount Works

Everything below is on Amazon. The Amazon Baby Registry gives you a completion discount on items still left on your list: 10% for most people and 15% for Prime members. You can also set up Subscribe & Save for diapers and wipes to save on every order.

This list is built for a first baby. For a second or third baby, I’d suggest different things. And yes, you can make a registry for a later baby! I made one for my second and third and never shared it. I just used it to keep track of what we needed and to get the completion discount.

Want a shorter starting point? My 6 baby must-haves beyond the basics highlights a few favorites before you work through the full registry.
